In-text
The analysis of argumentative discourse reveals that understanding the effectiveness and reasonableness of arguments is paramount for both informal and formal logic. The Pragma-Dialectical approach, for instance, emphasizes the balance between argumentative reasonableness and effectiveness, suggesting that these elements are not mutually exclusive but rather interdependent (Van Eemeren, 2015, pp. 115-117; Van Eemeren, 2018, p. 45). This perspective aligns with insights that informal logic serves as a critical tool in deconstructing everyday arguments by focusing on their practical application rather than merely their theoretical construction (Sinnott-Armstrong & Fogelin, 2015, p. 103; Hitchcock, 2017, pp. 88-89). Moreover, critical thinking1 is essential in evaluating arguments, as reasoning is inherently tied to the context in which it occurs (Hitchcock, 2017, p. 3). Similarly, the adversarial nature of philosophical debates, particularly in the Russell-Copleston exchange, highlights how the structure and strategy of argumentation play crucial roles in the overall persuasiveness of the discourse (Leal & Marraud, 2022, pp. 120-122; Van Eemeren, 2015, pp. 215-217). This intertextuality underscores the evolving nature of argumentation theory2, where various scholars contribute to a more nuanced understanding of how arguments function in different contexts and formats.
